Midnapore, 13 January: A former mafia trying to return to the mainstream of society with the help of his politician wife but his old rivals could not withstand this and thus decide to eliminate him ~ movie buffs have for sure come across this plot umpteen times in Hindi movies.
According to West Midnapore superintendent of police Bharati Ghosh, this is exactly what has happened as regards Shrinu Naidu, a railway scrap mafia and the husband of a Trinamool Kharagpur councillor, who was assassinated in a Trinamool office at Kharagpur on 11 January.
“There has been no allegation of anti-social activities against Shrinu in the past one and a half year since his wife got elected a councillor. But his old rivals could not withstand the fact that Shrinu was gradually evolving into a youth leader and were apprehensive that this might result in a clamp down on mafia activities at Kharagpur,” Ghosh told a news conference today.
Police have so far arrested seven persons for the assassination, including the kingpin Shankar Rao. Search is on for at least three more ~ one from Kharagpur and two from Jharkhand, the SP said.
“Shankar is the kingpin of the assassination but someone bigger could be the main mastermind. We are trying to find that out,” SP Ghosh added. Shankar Rao is an aide of Kharagpur’s former mafia don Basab Rambabu, who is now in Andhra Pradesh after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in murder cases.
Trinamool councillor’s husband Shrinu Naidu was the one who elbowed out Rambabu from Khargpur’s mafia world and had also allegedly carried out an assassination bid on him.
Of the seven, five were netted from Ghatal in West Midnapore yesterday afternoon; two were arrested late on yesterday from Bengal-Jharkhand border area. Five sophisticated firearms, a car, and a motorbike used in the assassination have also seized.
The conspiracy to eliminate Shrinu was hatched in two meetings held at Kharagpur and Jharkhand and the plan was implemented meticulously.
