Kolkata: Five days since the Pulwama terror attack on CRPF jawans for which the Centre is blaming Pakistan, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked whether the timing of the attack has anything to do with the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
She has referred to a United States intelligence alert, widely reported in Indian media last month, which anticipated communal riots in India in the run-up to the elections.
Citing some incidents in Bengal in the last 48-hours, Banerjee has alleged that much to the intelligence alert, BJP-RSS-VHP are now trying to incite communal riots in the country by exploiting the Pulwama incident.
“Even sometimes I think whether Pakistan became our friend or not! I don’t know. I have a doubt, how they got all this encouragement (for Pulwama attack) before election? Why after the Parliament got over, this type of things happened?”
“As a citizen of this country, I am in doubt why this happened? Why you didn’t take action against Pakistan earlier? Why at the time of election you (Centre) are talking (of war)?” Banerjee said during a news conference at state secretariat Nabanna this afternoon.
The Bengal CM said that if Pakistan was behind the Pulwama attack, why the Centre did allow this to happen.
“What have you done in the last five years? Pathankot to this incident ~ what action you have taken? When election is knocking on the door, you thought of waging a war? Another shadow war to play with the lives of the people?” she asked.
Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah of delivering political speeches on Pulwama attack even as the Opposition stood by the Centre, the Bengal CM said that a high-level probe is must to fix responsibility.
“Where is the actual failure? Why did this incident happen? If not today but tomorrow there will be an investigation as so many of our CRPF people have died.”
Banerjee maintained that for the last two days, RSS people holding National flag are taking to the streets at midnight in different parts of Bengal and trying to trigger riots.
“One incident has happened in Kolkata’s Behala last night, another in Bongaon, and then a religious marquee was attacked at Serampore last night. RSS-BJP-VHP is trying inciting riots. I have issued an instruction to police to handle this with an iron hand,” she said.
The CM cautioned BJP not to take advantage of the situation for electoral gains and, urged other political parties and right-thinking people to stay vigilant.
