Howrah: An entire concrete bridge over the Damodar river at Jagatballavpur in Howrah caved in this morning robbing people of several villages of a direct road link.
The incident took place at 6.15 am today. Residents said that they heard a huge cracking sound and rushed out of homes only to find the 100-foot long and 15-foot wide Kharapara bridge collapsing like a house of cards.
Being early in the morning, none was commuting through the bridge and hence there was no report of injuries. People alleged that the nearly 40-years old bridge had hardly been maintained ever.
Besides this, on the pretext of dredging, sand was illegally excavated from areas near the bridge. This weakened the bridge’s pillars and the bridge finally gave in today.
