Kalyani, 10 December: POLICE have arrested the estranged husband of murdered law student Moumita Biswas on charges of killing her even as he maintained not being involved in the crime.
Police had detained Nikhil Sen (24) yesterday from Titagarh in North 24-Parganas after Moumita was shot dead near the Kalyani water supply project in Nadia, the previous night. She was shot in the head from a close range by a motorbike borne assailant.
After questioning him overnight, Kalyani police arrested him today and produced him at the Kalyani sub-divisional court. The judge has remanded him in police custody.
Asked by reporters as to why he killed Moumita, Sen claimed he did not kill the girl whom he had married earlier this year following a courtship.
The marriage, however, did not last long and Moumita deserted him a few months ago. She subsequently enrolled for LLB course at the S K Acharya Institute of Law at Kalyani and used to stay in a rented house near the Institute.
“I did not kill her. I was at my shop,” he told reporters while blaming Moumita’s father for their separation.
Police suspect that Sen had got jealous after Moumita started seeing other youths and probably hired a killer to eliminate her. But it is not clear whether he was present at the spot when Moumita was shot dead on 08 December night.
