Midnapore: The husband of a BJP Panchayat poll candidate in West Midnapore district has committed suicide after allegedly being threatened by Trinamool cadres.
The incident has taken place at Keshiary and the victim has been identified as Bahadur Murmu, who was a Trinamool supporter.
According to his wife Jamuna Murmu, who has filed nomination papers to contest the coming Panchayat polls as a BJP candidate, her husband was being threatened by local Trinamool leaders ever since she decided to contest the elections.
Jamuna said that last night a gang of Trinamool workers raided their house and warned Bahadur to bar her from contesting the polls on BJP ticket. They threatened that if she filed nomination papers, their only son will be eliminated.
Ignoring the threats, Jamuna went out today morning and filed the nomination papers. She had taken her son with her, and her husband Bahadur was alone at home. Following this, the Trinamool gang allegedly raided their house again and scolded him for failing to stop his wife from filing the nomination.
Allegedly unable to withstand the threats, Bahadur drank poison. On returning home, Jamuna found him dead. Police subsequently retrieved the dead body and sent it for post-mortem.
