Kolkata, 23 February: MISCREANTS have looted Rs 4-crore from the branch of a gold loan company at Beniapukur in the heart of Kolkata.
The broad day heist took place at the Mumbai headquartered India Infoline’s (IIFL) branch at Beniapukur around 3 pm today.
Police said, a gang of five to six miscreants armed with firearms raided the ground floor branch and looted the money by pointing firearms on the staff and customers present. The money was kept in a chest inside the branch to facilitate loan to customers by mortgaging gold ornaments.
Prior to the raid, the miscreants removed the CCTV cameras installed outside and inside the branch. They also removed the hard-drive in which the CCTV camera footage was getting stored.
After conducting in entire operation within 10-15 minutes, the gang members quietly left the branch without raising the slightest suspicion in the immediate neighbourhood. The staff of the looted IIFL branch called up Beniapukur police station soon after the gang left.
Kolkata Police’s deputy commissioner (eastern suburban division) Debasmita Das went to the spot at one leading a team from Beniapukur police station.
Police are not ruling out insider hand or involvement of someone from the neighbourhood in the heist as the miscreants had precise information about the CCTV cameras, data room, and the money chest. Cops are talking to the staff for cues.
