Siliguri: Nobody can ever probably beat Mamata Banerjee in the talent for assigning names to whatever she is fond of ~ from buildings to park to road and so on and so forth!
In the latest instance, the Bengal Chief Minister has christened three tiger cubs born at the Bengal Safari park in Siliguri. Incidentally, this comes three days since she referred herself and the cadres of her party Trinamool as tiger cubs and dared the BJP to try an Assam-like National Register of Citizens in Bengal.
According to sources both at the state secretariat Nabanna and the Bengal Safari park, Banerjee has named the three tiger cubs as Kika, Rika, and Ika. This was communicated to the park authorities from the CM’s office Nabanna today.
State forest minister Binay Krishan Barman said that his department had requested the Chief Minister to assign names to the cubs and she has obliged. Arun Mukherjee, the director of Bengali Safari park, said that the three Royal Bengal Cubs will now be known by the assigned names.
The three female cubs were born to the Royal Bengal Tiger couple Shila and her partner Snehasish on 16 May. The couple was brought to the open arena park in December 2016. Mukherjee said that as of now the cubs are in a special covered enclosure and they will be set free with their parents after another three months.
It may be mentioned that of the several establishments that the Chief Minister has christened since 2011, the prominent is the naming of the state secretariat as Nabanna and the road leading to Satyajit Ray’s house as Satyajit Roy Dharani.
In Bengali, Nabanna refers to a celebration by farmers on reaping paddy harvest. Dharani stands for the earth.
