Siliguri, 06 March: IN a sensational incident, a poverty-stricken wage labourer in Siliguri today hacked his minor daughter to death, and then killed self by hanging.
The incident took place late this afternoon at Jabravita near Milan More in Siliguri. The deceased have been identified as Sukra Hansda and Soma Hansda, father and daughter, respectively.
Sukra’s elder son Harishchandra Hansda (17) studies in calss XI, and the deceased daughter Soma (10) studies in class V at Paramananda Nepali High School at Champasari, not very far from their residence.
On rerunning from school today afternoon, Harishchandra found his sister Soma lying in a pool of blood on the veranda of their mud-house. Lying next to her was a blood-stained machete (Khukri) and an uneaten plate of rice.
Harishchandra stepped inside the mud-house, only to find his father Sukra hanging from the ceiling. A shell-shocked Harishchandra regained composure after a while and cried out for help.
Neighbours rushed in at once, and subsequently called up the Pradhannagar police station. A team led by deputy commissioner of police, Sangmit Lepcha, arrived and sent the two dead bodies for post-mortem.
Lepcha said that police were yet to get a clue as to what led to the tragic incident. “Residents of the area are saying that the father hacked his daughter and then hanged himself. But we need to verify the statement the authenticity and corroborate the same with evidence,” she said.
Police have come to know that Sukumar’s wife, who too is a wage labourer, was way from home for work when the incident took place. The family struggled to make their ends meet.
