Bolpur, 18 September: A government nurse, who married the man of her love seven months ago, has been found dead in her quarters in Birbhum district today morning.
This comes a day after she received an order of promotion as senior nurse and transfer to a block hospital in north Bengal. She had communicated her happiness on this over the phone to her mother.
Swati Gharai, 32, was posted at the Barrah Primary Health Centre under Birbhum’s Kankartala police station area since 2009. She was spotted hanging this morning in her quarters located on the hospital premises by neighbours, who had got curious on finding the main door wide open.
Her husband Dinesh Mukherjee, who lived with her, has gone missing since the incident. Eyewitnesses say Swati was hanging from the ceiling with a scarf but her legs were very much in contact with a bed, using which she could have easily survived.
This and her husband going missing, have made her parents to allege that she was murdered and then hanged from the ceiling to make it appear suicide. Their needle of suspicion is her husband Dinesh, whom Swati had married without their consent.
Her elder brother Subir Garai said that the family had objected to their marriage in February, but later accepted the relationship for the sake of happiness of his sister. “She was excited about the promotion and transfer until last night. Hence, it is unlikely that she would kill herself. Besides the door was wide open,” he said.
Police have sent the nurse’s body for post-mortem and have launched a manhunt for her missing husband.
