Kolkata: Lightning has killed an airline staff at Kolkata airport while another man has died at Bongaon in North 24-Parganas district.
This happened today morning when Kolkata and several districts in south Bengal witnessed heavy thundershower accompanied by lightning. The lightning has subsided now but the rains are still on.
The ground staff of Jet Airways at the airport, whose name is yet to be ascertained, was struck by lightning when he was performing his duty at the air-side of the airport. He was rushed to a private hospital at New Town and doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Around the same time, a farmer named Mafizul Mondal died at Bongaon in North 24-Parganas after he was stricken by lightning as he was working in his paddy field. A co-farmer of him, Illias Biswas, suffered severe injuries and has been hospitalised.
The weather office has said that due to the strong southwest monsoon, Kolkata, North and South 24-Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, Nadia, East and West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura, and West Burdwan will witness intense rainfall over the next 48-hours. It will be accompanied by lightning.
In Kolkata, since morning till 1 pm, it has rained 39 mm at Ultadanga, 13 mm at Dum Dum, 57 mm at Ballygunge, 51 mm at Mukundapur, 41 mm at Topsia, 48 mm at Dhapa, 36 mm at Alipore, 40 mm at Patuli, 29 mm at Behala, and 34 mm at Joka.
As regards the districts, it has rained 20 mm at Canning, 31 mm at Diamond Harbour, 19 mm at Haldia, and 18 mm at Malda.
