Asansol: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today showered praises on the Indian democracy and said that it because of democracy that India is a better place to live in.

“India had a democratic tradition and it still has. It is for the democratic tradition that life in India has developed so much. We (Bangladesh) have been deprived of this as we have faced attacks (on our institutions) time and again,” Hasina said after receiving the honourary D.Litt. at the Kazi Nazrul University at Asansol today.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister said that the honourary D.Litt. conferred on her is an honour to Bangladesh and its people Bengal.

“This very significant for me to accept an honour in the name of Kazi Nazrul, who is the national poet of Bangladesh…Bengal may have got divided (during India’s Independence in 1947) but Rabindranath and Nazrul can never be divided. They are inseparable from Bengalis living all over,” she said.

Hasina thanked India once again today saying that India has stood by Bangladesh through the thick and thin.
