Siliguri, 04 January: INDIAN women’s football team has clinched the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship 2016 by defeating Bangladesh in the final match played in Siliguri today afternoon.
India defeated Bangladesh by 03:01 goals in the match played at the Kanchenjungha Stadium in Siliguri. With this, the Indian women’s football team has won the SAFF Championship fourth time in a row.
SAFF Championship 2016 had kicked off in Siliguri on 26 December. India reached the final by defeating Nepal in a semi-final match on 02 January; Bangladesh made an entry by defeating the Maldives.
SAFF Women’s Championship, held biennially, was started in 2010 involving the national teams of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Sri Lanka. This time, however, Pakistan did not participate in the championship held in India for the first time.
With today’s win, India has won all the four SAFF Women’s Championships held since inception.
