Kolkata, 18 August: PRESIDENT Pranab Mukherjee has lost his wife Suvra Mukherjee to illness. She passed away on Tuesday after prolonged illness at the Army Hospital in New Delhi. She was 74.

The First Lady of India was admitted to the ICU of Army Hospital on 7 August after she suffered a cardiac arrest. Failing the doctors’ best efforts she succumbed at 10.51 am on Tuesday.

Born on 17 September 1940 in Jessore (now in Bangladesh), she got married to President Mukherjee on 13 July 1957.

She was a graduate and was a trained Rabindra Sangeet singer. She had performed in various concerts and musical shows all over the world, along with the Geetanjali Troupe that she had founded.

Author of two books Chokher Aloey and Chena Achenai Chin, Mrs Mukherjee was also a talented painter. She had exhibited her skills in several solo and group exhibitions.

Apart from her husband, the President, she is survived by two sons ~ Lok Sabha MP Abhijit Mukherjee and Indrajit Mukherjee, and daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee.
