Midnapore: A promising teenage footballer has died in Bankura district after being injured during a soccer match.

The deceased has been identified as Abhijit Pan, 14, who was a resident of Joypur in Bankura. Abhijit was studying in the IXth standard and was a promising sportsman.

On Monday 9 September, the teenage boy was playing in an inter-school football championship at Joypur when he suffered a head injury during the match. He was at once rushed to Bishnupur Sub-divisional Hospital in an unconscious state.

Finding his condition critical, the hospital referred him to Bankura Medical College and Hospital. But doctors there declared him dead on arrival.

After conducting a post-mortem, Abhijit’s body was handed over to his family today. State junior panchayat minister and Kotulpur MLA, Shyamal Santra, accompanied the cortege.

“It is very unfortunate that a small mishap has taken away a promising footballer. Our government will bear all the expenses for his last rites. Also, since the family is poor, we will try to provide some employment to his elder brother,” Santra said.
