Kolkata, 13 August: THE police arrested a teacher of Jadavpur University early on Thursday after the car he was driving hit two persons near Bagha Jatin More in south Kolkata.
Shamik Ghosh, a professor of mathematics at Jadavpur University, was driving along Raipur Road, allegedly in an inebriated state.
An eyewitness said that the incident took place around 12.10 am Thursday when Ghosh’s car first hit a middle-aged man near Bagha Jatin More and then hit a young woman on a motorbike (Scooty) a little away. The car then rammed into a sweet shop that had downed its shutters a little ago.
Soon after this, local residents caught hold of the professor and called in the Jadavpur Police who arrested him. Police towed away his partially damaged car and rushed the two injured to a nearly hospital.
While the man hit by Ghosh’s car sustained minor injuries and was released after administering a few stitches on his hands; the young woman is still undergoing treatment at private facility in Jadavpur with severe injuries on her head, legs and hands. The shutter and walls of the sweet shop hit by the professor’s car have also been badly damaged.
The arrested professor happens to be an alumnus of Jadavpur University and he did his Phd in graph theory and abstract algebra from Calcutta University.
