Kolkata: Even as the students continue to hold agitation over Jadavpur University authorities scrapping the entrance test for undergraduate admission, the varsity authorities have today notified the dates for direct admission on the basis of class XII score.
Going by this, the admission to various undergraduate courses will take place from 27-31 July, barring 29 July, which is Sunday. The authorities have also extended the deadline for receiving fresh applications from intending students till 12 July.
The admission committee formed by Jadavpur University took the decision today notwithstanding the agitating students confining vice-chancellor Suranjan Das and other senior functionaries to their officer chamber throughput last night. The students are continuing with the agitation on the campus even now.
The agitators are of the opinion that scrapping the entrance test that has been in place for several decades, will lead to compromising on the quality of students who get admitted to undergraduate humanities courses.
They have clarified that the agitation will continue until the entrance test is reinstated. Several alumni of the university today turned up on the campus in solidarity with the agitating students.
Meanwhile, taking exception to the alleged advice by the state advocate general not to involve the teachers of the university in the admission process, the teachers of English department has told the vice-chancellor that they will not perform any task as regards the admission.
“We do not understand why a legal opinion was deemed necessary even when there have been no complaints of a foul play about the entrance test all these decades. Since we have been asked not to stay involved, we have recused ourselves from all admission related tasks,” said Paromita Chakraborty, a teacher in the English department.
