Kolkata, 16 September: A student of Jaipuria College in the city died and four other people were injured as a speeding auto-rickshaw overturned after dashing on a bus near Gouri Bari More in Sobhabazar area in north Kolkata today morning.
Deceased Puja Paul (20), a first year under graduate accountancy honours student, was travelling in the auto-rickshaw from her residence at Beliaghata to her college located near Sobhabazar Metro station.
Puja was seated next to the driver Jaideb Naskar, while there were three other passengers ~ Ajay Sarkar, Iti Sarkar, and Shibu Suraiya ~ seated in the rear seat of the auto-rickshaw.
Police said that around 06.15 am today, a private bus of Barasat-Howrah route was heading towards Khanna via Aurobindo Sarani. As the bus was crossing the Gouri Bari traffic junction, the auto-rickshaw flouted signal from Raja Dinendra Street end and dashed on the rear part of the bus.
On hitting on the moving bus, the auto-rickshaw overturned on the road. Puja and the driver fell under the overturned auto-rickshaw; the other three passengers were flung onto the road. The accident brought traffic to a halt and local people soon rushed all the four injured to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Doctors at R G Kar declared Puja brought dead; driver Jaideb Naskar, and two passengers Ajay Sarkar and Iti Sarkar of Baghbazar Street were admitted. The fourth passenger Shibu Suraiya was released on first-aid. The condition of the driver is very critical.
Eyewitnesses said that the auto-rickshaw had hit on the bus at such a high speed that its better part has got twisted. Although they gave the bus a clean chit in the accident, police have confiscated both the bus and the damaged auto-rickshaw for investigation.
