Siliguri: A young officer of the Bengal government was found hanging in his official quarter at Jalpaiguri past Wednesday midnight. His wife of a year has said that he hanged himself after a fight with her.
Nadir Shah, 28, was an assistant treasury officer at Jalpaiguri and lived at the Composite Complex ~ a housing facility for state government officials ~ located at Rajbaripara area in the town. His wife Rakhi had been living with him in the first-floor quarter for the past eight months.
Around 1 am today, Rakhi came knocking on the door of an adjacent quarter and told the neighbour that Nadir has hanged himself. Everyone rushed and found the youth hanging from the ceiling fan.
He was brought down at once and rushed to Jalpaiguri Super-specialty Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Rakhi has told police that Nadir had an argument with her over something and then hanged himself out of rage. Neighbours have corroborated this saying that the couple had a severe fight on Wednesday night and their shouting at each-other was very much audible from outside.
But it not clear at this point as what was it they fought over and that made the young man hang himself with his wife present in the flat. Sources claimed that the two suspected each-other of an extramarital affair and this was at the centre of the discord.
Incidentally, Nadir’s death comes within two days of the young couple returning from a vacation in Gangtok on Tuesday.
The deceased was a native of Burrabazar area in Kolkata. Shocked by the news of his death, his family members have left for Jalpaiguri. To evade media queries, his bereaved wife has locked out the quarter and has gone to an undisclosed relative’s house, sources said.
Nadir had as many as 810 friends on Facebook and a host of photographs with friends and relatives. But curiously, despite being married for over a year, he did not upload a single photo with wife Rakhi.
