Siliguri: THREE jewellery traders have been arrested in Siliguri after smuggled gold bars weighing around 3.618-kg was found on them. The seized gold is worth about Rs 1.14-crore.
The three traders have been identified as Nitish Debnath, Pradip Debnath, and Rupam Sen. All of them are jewellers from Cooch Behar district. They had allegedly smuggled in the gold from Myanmar and were to sell those off to a dealer in Kolkata.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials nabbed the trio at New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri last night when they were travelling to Kolkata from New Cooch Behar.
DRI officials brought them to the agency’s Siliguri office. On frisking the trio, they found the gold bars hidden under their belts. DRI has claimed that the trip has been involved in illegal gold trading in the past as well.
They were produced at the Siliguri ACJM court today and the judge has sent them to judicial custody till Monday, 26 February.
