Kolkata: A large number of unemployed youths today walked half-naked in a rally in Kolkata demanding the declaration of results of Bengal government’s Group D recruitment drive.
The rally started from Sealdah and charted a distance of nearly 3 km to Esplanade in the heart of the city, with occasional intervention by police to stop the marchers. The participant unemployed youths did not wear a shirt, T-shirt or kurta; they rather marched through the city streets in bare body.
The rally was minus any political or apolitical organisational banner. The participants declared themselves as “All Group D exam qualified candidates.” They said that they decided to walk the rally half-naked because the state government virtually reduced them to this state.
The West Bengal Group D Recruitment Board had in 2016 invited applications for recruitment of 6,000 Group D personnel in state government offices and had received 24.68 lakh valid applications against the call.
In May last year, the Board conducted a written exam for the applicants. The nearly 18,000 successful candidates were then called for personal interview in phases between October 2017 and February 2018. The Board the assured declaring the final selection list soon.
But even as almost four months have passed by since then, the Board is yet to declare the list even as the unemployed youths are craving for jobs. This made them take out the bare body rally in Kolkata today.
