Kolkata: THE INDIAN arm of the multinational giant that runs KFC and Pizza Hut food joints today said that it will source from Bengal the raw materials required for its restaurants located in the north and northeast India.

The announcement comes on the eve of the state-government hosted Bengal Global Business Summit that kicks off at New Town in Kolkata tomorrow.

Rajat Luthra, CEO of Devyani International Ltd ~ the pan-India franchisee of Yum Restaurants India Pvt Ltd disclosed the plan on the sidelines of inking a memorandum-of-understanding (MoU) at Bengal state secretariat Nabanna this afternoon. Yum owns KFC and Pizza Hut brands.

The MoU, inked with Bengal’s horticulture and food processing department, pertains to setting up more KFC and Pizza Hut food joints in the state in places like Kolkata, Durgapur, Asansol, and Siliguri. Presently, there are 26 KFC and 20 Pizza Hut outlets in Bengal.

The department will assist the proposed units to obtain necessary permissions and licences. It has already assigned a nodal officer especially for this.

The company has been sourcing chicken and eggs for its outlets in Bengal from the Arambagh Hatcheries, a private entity located in Hooghly district. “Now on, we will supply the raw materials procured from Arambagh Hatcheries to our outlets located in the north and northeast India,” Luthra said.

This apart, the company has also assured the state government that it will explore the possibility of sourcing vegetables like potatoes from Bengal for its food joints.

“We have requested the group to procure all vegetables directly from our farmers through Farmers’ Producers Organisations (FPO). A group of 1,000 farmers form an FPO and there are about 100 FPOs in the state,” said state agriculture adviser, Pradip Majumdar, who was present on the occasion.

The MoU inked today carries the promise of an investment of Rs 100-crore to be spent mostly on setting up new KFC and Pizza Hut joints in Bengal over the next five years. This is likely to generate 800 direct and 600 indirect employment.
