Behrampore: RELATIVES of an expectant mother, who died following a caesarean section, has set fire to a private nursing home at Rejinagar in Murshidabad.
The arson took place today evening and the situation came under control only after a large posse of police rushed to the site.
Police have arrested Shahid Mullick, the owner of the nursing home, on the basis of an FIR lodged by the deceased woman’s family for the alleged negligence in her treatment. None has been arrested for the arson as yet.
Zulekha Bibi (27) of Saktipur police station area in the same district was admitted to the private nursing home at Rejinagar today morning with advanced labour. Surgeons started a caesarean section on her in the afternoon. During the procedure, her condition deteriorated.
She was at once referred to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital at Behrampore but passed away while being transported. The baby in her womb also died.
Peeved over this, her family members and relatives returned to the nursing home in the evening and resorted to massive vandalism. Subsequently, they set fire to a ward where there was no patient. A motorcycle that was parked outside the nursing home was also torched.
On being alerted, a large posse of policemen rushed in from Rejinagar police station and drive away the vandals. The fire was doused before it could spread to other wards and parts of the nursing home. Police later arrested the nursing home owner after the bereaved family lodged an FIR.
