Cooch Behar, 27 August: WEST Bengal police have arrested two top leaders of the proscribed Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), one of whom is the prime accused in the December 2013 blast at Brajrapara in Jalpaiguri that had killed five persons.

According to Cooch Behar district superintendent of police Rajesh Yadav, the duo ~ Lal Singh Deka alias Hareshwar Barman and Anath Roy alias Hiranmay ~ were arrested early on Thursday from Balakuthi area on Cooch Behar-Assam border.

“Lal Singh is the organising secretary of KLO and Anath Roy is KLO’s commander-in-chief. They are both residents of Gosaigaon in Kokrajhar district in Assam and Lal Singh is the prime accused in the 2013 Jalpaiguri blast,” Mr Yadav said.

Police are considering this a major breakthrough because, both the arrested persons are central committee members of KLO, which took to terrorism for near two decades now over the demand for a spate Kamtapur state for the Koch Rajbangshi people living in north Bengal and lower Assam.

KLO has an operational understanding with dreaded terror outfits such as the ULFA and NDFB of Assam and NSCN (K) of Nagaland.

In the evening of 26 December 2013, five persons were killed and six were injured when a bomb kept in a bicycle on a culvert at Bajrapara off Jalpaiguri town exploded. Police have all along been saying that the blast was carried out by KLO.
