Barasat: Police have reopened the investigation into the unnatural death of Joydeep Biswas, an Airports Authority of India (AAI) officer of Kolkata airport, 14 years ago.

Not only this, but police are also scrutinising the mysterious deaths of three of his family members in close successions before him.

This comes three days since Joydeep’s widow, Aditi Chakraborty (43), was arrested by police for recently murdering her estranged second husband Pratul Chakraborty (52) at Panihati in North 24-Parganas.

Aditi had married Pratul in 2008 and, divorced him earlier this year.

Police on Monday claimed that Aditi, who got her first husband Joydeep’s job on compensatory grounds, has confessed that she killed Pratul as he was creating hindrance in her plans to marry for the third time.

Aditi got married for the first time with AAI officer Joydeep in 2001. Joydeep was a resident of Choudhury Para at Barasat.

Within two-three years of the marriage, Joydeep’s mother died of sleeping pill overdose and, his visiting paternal aunt and uncle also died in unnatural circumstances in the same house.

Then in May 2004, Joydeep was found dead in his house one fine morning with white fluid like substance oozing out of his mouth and his body turned bluish. Barasat police got a post-mortem done of his body and, this had revealed the presence of alcohol in his stomach.

Taking a cue from this, Joydeep’s extended family had complained to police that he was murdered as according to them, he was not a drinker.

Police then quizzed Aditi and her parental family members but could not unearth any foul play.

Meanwhile, Aditi got Joydeep’s job at Kolkata airport as a childcare officer and moved to a new house at Cossipore in north Kolkata with her minor son. She sold off Joydeep’s share of his ancestral property at Barasat later.

In 2008 she married for the second time. This time her alliance was Pratul, then a senior officer with a pharmaceutical company. A year later, she gave birth to a daughter from Pratul.

But with his company’s fortune taking a hit within a few years, Pratul lost his job and become dependent on Aditi’s earning. This created discord between them and, Aditi divorced him earlier this year.

Aditi then put up her profile on a matrimonial site saying that she is a divorcee with children and is looking for a suitable alliance.

Several men responded but she zeroed down on a man younger to her, who works for a private company.

As Aditi was planning to marry for the third time, Pratul got wind of this and allegedly started blackmailing her. He also threatened her prospective matrimonial alliance.

Earlier this month, Pratul rented a house at Panihati and invited over Aditi on 19 December night. The next day he was found dead and a team from Khardah police station arrested Aditi on charges of the murder.

Aditi initially told police that she killed Pratul in self-defence as he was trying to strangulate her.

But on the face of police interrogation, she has now confessed that the murder was pre-planned as Pratul was coming in the way of her third marriage.

Investigating into the case, Khardah police team stumbled upon the fact that Aditi’s first husband and his three family members had died in mysterious circumstances over 14 years ago. Due to this, they have started digging into these old cases as well.
