Kolkata: Dengue has claimed one more life in Kolkata taking the number of death toll to five in the city in just about a fortnight.
In the latest case, a 43-year-old homemaker succumbed to the deadly sting at a private hospital at Ekbalpur in south Kolkata. Noor Jahan Khatoon, originally from Bihar, used to live with her husband and children at Kabitirtha Sarani near Fancy Market at Khidderpore.
Noor Jahan was admitted to the private hospital on 11 September with high fever and was diagnosed positive for dengue. She breathed her last at dawn today. The hospital has mentioned cardiac arrest following dengue shock syndrome as the cause of her death.
Narayan Shrestha (10) of Duttabad in Salt Lake died of dengue on 30 August. Another boy, Akash Choudhury (9), from the same area, passed away on 6 September. Then on 10 September died Krishna Hazra (40) of Murari Pukur near Ultadanga. Aarush Dutta (11) of Goa Bagan near Maniktala breathed his last on 11 September.
Although the hospital where they died mentioned dengue as the cause of death in the death certificates, neither the Kolkata Municipal Corporation nor the state health department has formally confirmed this.
