Kolkata: A young footballer, who had to drop out of the sports due to poverty, has died in mysterious circumstances at Lake Gardens in south Kolkata.
Ranjit Chatterjee’s mutilated body was found around 10 pm Friday night by the railway tracks near Lake Gardens station. A train driver of Sealdah – Budge Budge route reported mowing down a man around that time.
Chatterjee, 30, was a resident of Sultan Alam Road under Charu Market police station jurisdiction. In the past, he had played for the Kolkata Port Trust football team and had gone to Germany for training.
But two years ago gave up professional football for want of money and started driving auto-rickshaw to support his family. He was also running a football coaching centre for children in the neighbourhood.
According to his wife, on Friday evening he had an argument with her over watching the Brazil versus Costa Rica match and went out of the home in anger only to return and watch the rest of the match.
After the match got over with Brazil winning, Chatterjee went out again around 8 pm. Around 10.30 pm his wife got a call saying that he has been run over by a train. Police later found a suicide note in his house that reads: “Nobody is responsible for my death.”
The bereaved family, however, are not accepting that the footballer committed suicide. His wife has told police that Chatterjee had paid Rs 2.5-lakh to a man for buying a new auto-rickshaw. But the man was neither delivering the auto-rickshaw nor refunding the money for the past few months.
A discord was going on between them over this. On Friday afternoon some youths had come home calling Chatterjee for an outing but he declined going out for he wanted to watch the Brazil match. Police are questioning the people whom his wife has named as suspects for alleged involvement in his death.
