Kolkata: Police have arrested Ratna Chatterjee, the estranged wife of Kolkata Mayor and Trinamool minister Sovan Chatterjee, for holding an overnight dharna in front of the housing complex at Golpark in south Kolkata where the Mayor lives these days.

Ratana had resorted to the dharna since Thursday midnight after the Mayor denied signing the Visa application for a proposed study tour of their daughter to Japan on 2 June. Their daughter Suhani Chatterjee studies in a private school located near Ruby on EM Bypass in the city.

According to Ratna, despite repeated requests by her and her lawyer, the Mayor denied signing the application, which required the signatures of both the parents. The application must be submitted by 28 May and thus she was compelled to sit in the dharna. Her daughter and lawyer were also in the dharna.

The Mayor, on the other hand, has said that he cannot sign the Visa application due to “technical reasons.” Sources close to him said that the application form has mentioned the Mayor’s Behala address and since he is logged into a divorce suit with wife, signing the application with Behala address will hamper the case.

Meanwhile, on getting news about Ratna’s dharna, a large number of followers of the Mayor turned up near his residential complex and resorted to an agitation demanding that she be arrested for troubling the Mayor. This eventually forced the police from Rabindra Sarobar police station to arrest Ratna for illegal assembly.
