Siliguri: The father of Kolkata actress Payel Chakraborty, nee Guha, found hanging in a hotel in Siliguri, has said that she was suffering from depression for a while and this may have pushed her into ending her life.

Payel, in her mid-30, had checked in alone to Hotel Yuma at Nabin Sen Road near Air View More in Siliguri on Tuesday (4 September) evening. The actress had told the hotel staff that she will be traveling to Gangtok next morning and requested them an early wake-up call.

However, when the hotel staff knocked on her door around 7 am yesterday, there came no response. After knocking for a while, the hotel smelled that something is amiss. This is more so because Payel could be heard shouting over her mobile phone till late on Tuesday night.

The hotel management informed the Siliguri police station. A team of cops came and broke open the door of her Room No 13 only to find the actress hanging. They retrieved the dead body and sent it for post-mortem.

Till then neither the hotel staff nor the police had an ilk that she was the popular actress Payel who has acted in Bengali telly serials ‘Choker Tara’, ‘Rupayan’, also was among the cast Bengali star Dev’s 2017 movie ‘Cockpit’, and has played a lead role in to be released Bengali movie ‘Kelo’.

Police found Payel’s family contacts from some documents in her luggage and called up them to inform about her aberrant demise. It was then that the cops learned her’s was the popular actress.

Her mother told police that Payel had a shoot in Simurali in Nadia on Monday and was to travel to Ranchi for another shoot the next day. But she didn’t return to her flat at New Garia in Kolkata to embark on the journey to Ranchi and her mobile too was switched off. This made her mother to lodge a missing diary at the Panchasayar police station on Tuesday.

The actress’ father, Pranab Guha of Naihati in North 24-Parganas, reached Siliguri today morning to collect her dead body. He has told police and reporters that Payel was suffering from depression for a while and was battling a divorce suit filed by her husband.

“But we have no grievance against her husband for what she has done to herself,” the bereaved father said. The family, however, is wondering why she went to Siliguri instead on Ranchi.

Family sources said that Payel married in 2006 and has a nine-year-old son. But with her devoting more time to acting and related affairs, Payel developed a distance from her family.

This made her husband start living with their son separately in a flat at Tollygunge, while Payel lived alone in a flat at New Garia with an occasional stay over by her mother. Her husband finally filed a divorce suit in 2015. As months passed, the divorce suit and her acting life pushed Payel in a depression.

Siliguri police are now going through her mobile call list to find out whom she was shouting over the phone from the hotel on the previous night of her death.
