Kolkata: After absconding for nearly a fortnight, the Kolkata woman, who had chopped off the ears of her young husband, has finally been netted by the police.

Police arrested Mumtaz Bibi (40) from her Narkeldanga North Road house in central Kolkata last night. Along with her, was arrested her younger sister Mariam Bibi, who is a co-accused in the crime. The duo was produced in court and the judge sent them to jail custody.

Mumtaz had married neighbourhood youth Muhammad Tanvir, who is half her age, in 2016. Since then he started living in her residence.

However, with Mumtaz allegedly tried to control every aspect of Tanvir’s life and used to physically assault him whenever he defied her diktat. This made Tanvir flee from the home on 16 July, only to be caught and brought back by Mumtaz’s family the very next day.

On 17 July, Mumtaz and her sister allegedly beat him up severely and in a fit of rage also chopped off both his ears. As fainted following this, they thought he is dead and left him unattended in a room. Tanvir escaped from there in the wee hours next day and was admitted to NRS Medical College and Hospital.

His family lodged an FIR at Narkeldanga police station against Mumtaz and her sister for trying to murder him. Sensing danger, the accused fled by putting their house under lock and key.

After hiding for nearly a fortnight, they returned to the Narkeldanaga residence only yesterday. Police got a timely tip-off on this and arrested the duo at once.
