Howrah/Hooghly, 03 February: A youth has been arrested for allegedly molesting a college girl on-board the Howrah-bound Doon Express early this morning.
The incident took place after the train had crossed Durgapur and was running towards Howrah. Co-passengers of AC 3-tier B-1 coach were woken up by the screams of the girl asking for help. She had boarded the train at Jaunpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh and was travelling to Howrah alone.
As she cried out for help, the accused, identified as Ravi Sonkar (27), a resident of Burrabazar in Kolkata, ran out of the coach. When the train halted at Bandel railway station in Hooghly, he tried to flee.
But on being alerted by the victim and her co-passengers, two IRCTC employees caught him from the railway station. He was then handed over to the Railway Protection Force personnel who were deputed in the train; RPF in turn handed over him to the Government Railway Police at Bandel.
The girl has alleged that while she and other passengers were asleep, the youth tried to molest her during early hours in the morning. She lodged a written complaint at the Howrah GRP station after the train reached here later in the morning.
She has alleged that despite dialling repeatedly on the railway helpline, no one came to her rescue. The co-passengers said that at the time of the incident, neither the ticket examiner nor any RPF personnel could be spotted in the vicinity of the B-1coach.
GRP Bandel has now taken the youth to the Chinsurah court in Hooghly for production.
