Kolkata, 17 August: CYCLING, which is a popular mode of intra-city public transport in London and Germany for long, will be now emulated in Kolkata.
To facilitate eco-friendly and cost-effective accessibility, the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has decided to introduce public cycling in some parts of Rajarhat New Town, the new urban hub adjoining Kolkata.
As part of the initiative, people visiting the various places of interest in New Town will be offered bicycles on hire. According to HIDCO officials the facility is likely to be made available after the Durga Puja in October.
“Introduction of public cycle will be an eco-friendly step towards controlling air pollution in the New Town, which we are developing both as a smart and green city” HIDCO chairman Debasis Sen told Newsmen.
Initially, the facility will be available in Action Area 1-A, where HIDCO will develop a separate lane exclusively cycling. Important landmarks in the area such as Axis Mall, Nazul Tirtha, Home Town, Block Tower and other office buildings will be linked to this cycling lane.
To avail of this facility, visitors will be required to buy a pre-paid card and then hire the cycles from pre-designated stands for a ride to any place of their choice. HIDCO is yet to finalise the nitty-gritty of how and where these pre-paid cards are to be made available.
