Siliguri, 20 December: KURSEONG in Darjeeling Hills is simmering in anger over the suspected rape and murder of a minor girl whose mangled body was found on 17 December.

Deceased Aakriti Tamang (14), who lived with her parents at the labour line Ambootia tea estate, was a student of class VIII at Ramkrishna Girls High School in Kurseong town. She went missing on her way back home from school and was found dead in a mangled state beside a hill spring, after a gap of 32 days.

At the behest of a local NGO, people in droves took part in a large protest rally in Kurseong today, demanding toughest punishment for the violators and killers of the minor girl. Aaakrti’s school mates also walked in the protest rally holding placards condemning her gruesome murder.

The rally traversed through the arterial toads in Kurseong and the participants also held a demonstration at the Kurseong railway station. The organisers of the rally have vowed to continue with the agitation until and unless all accused in the case was arrested and punished.

Police in the meantime have arrested three youths ~ Asish, Prayash, Anmol ~ for their alleged involvement in the murder of the minor girl.

Fearing public backlash, the trio was produced before the Darjeeling district court instead of at Kurseong Sub-divisional Court. The judge remanded the trio to police custody. Police suspect that the trio had raped and then murdered the girl this even as the post-mortem report of the deceased was still awaited.
