Siliguri, 12 August: TWO persons have died of landslides in Darjeeling Hills, while three have been hospitalised with critical conditions. One of the deceased is a woman; the other is an aged male.

The deaths took place early today at Gaddi Line (Sokhia Pokhri) and Alubari (Jorebungalow) in Darjeeling sub-division when debris fell on houses due to landslide. As many as six houses in these areas have been washed away by the landslides.

Similar landslides have been reported from various places in Kurseong. Incessant heavy rain has raised fears about more landslides in the Hills.

The victims have been identified as Man Kumari Rai (51) and Norbu Tamag (78). Even as other members of their families managed to run to safety when the debris came rushing early today, the two could not make it.

Their bodies were later retrieved by the villagers, and along with three injured, were sent to the Darjeeling District Hospital.
