Hooghly, 28 September: A group of lawyers thrashed on-duty policemen at the Serampore court premises in Hooghly on Monday afternoon after the cops had allegedly misbehaved with them.
The lawyers alleged that the police stopped and misbehaved with two advocates when they went to meet their clients who were lodged in the court lock-up for production before a magistrate.
When confronted, two on-duty policemen allegedly also threatened to shoot the lawyers if they visited the lock-up again. The angry lawyers immediately lodged a complaint with the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM).
The ACJM called both the policemen and the lawyers to his chamber for a negotiation. But when the two accused policemen were walking towards the chamber of the ACJM, they were attacked by a group of lawyers.
The two policemen were rescued by other cops to the safety of the chamber of a senior civil administration officer located in the court premises.
In the melee, some photojournalists shooting the clash were threatened by the lawyers not to record the incident. Some lawyers even tried to snatch their cameras.
