Kolkata, 18 March: A day after raising the issue with the state and national women’s commission, the Left student and youth wings today hit the streets in Kolkata against the alleged strip-search of SFI women leaders inside Alipore Women’s Correctional Home in the city last week.

The Left youth activists in large numbers took part in a protest march from College Square to Esplanade today afternoon demanding action against the woman warden who carried out the strip-search on four SFI women leaders. Several women leaders of the CPI-M also participated in the rally.

On 10 March, the City Sessions Court had sent eight SFI-DYFI leaders to judicial custody at Alipore Women’s Correctional Home after they had blocked the road at Esplanade and clashed with police alleging corruption in primary teacher appointments. They were released on bail on 14 March.

According to SFI state secretary Madhuja Senroy, who was among the eight, while being sent to their designated cells at Alipore Correctional Home on 10 March, a female warden made four of them remove all their clothing but lingerie in the name of security frisking.

The National Commission for Women has already assured Senroy of sending a team to Kolkata to probe the incident. SFI yesterday brought the matter to the notice of State Commission for Women.
