Siliguri: A woman worker has been mauled by a leopard at Danguajhar tea garden on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri town.
The injured woman, Kranti Oran (24), is now admitted to Jalpaiguri Super-speciality Hospital. Doctors said she is out of danger.
Oran was plucking tea leaves at the tea garden on Wednesday morning when the leopard emerged from nowhere and attacked her from behind. The animal left her when hearing her cries for help other workers rushed to the spot.
Following the incident, the management of Danguajhar tea garden has suspended tea plucking in section 22 of the garden where the leopard attack took place. The forest department has placed two traps in the vicinity to net the ferocious leopard.
Leopards usually venture into the tea gardens during monsoon to give birth to their offspring in the drains lying between rows of tea bushes. Tea workers nearing to the spot in the course of their tea plucking job is considered a hostile act by the wild animal.
