Kolkata/Midnapore: Lightning has killed at least four people and has left 17 critically injured in two separate incidents in Kolkata and Purulia.
Among the injured are six tourists from Bangladesh and they are now being treated at the SSKM Hospital in the city.
The incidents took place today 16 August afternoon a little after Kolkata started witnessing heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Around 3.45 pm, lightning struck some tourists who had queued up for a visit to Victoria Memorial in central Kolkata. This happened near the south gate of Victoria Memorial compound.
In all, 17 tourists were struck by the lightning, and one of them, Subir Pal, 34, died on the spot. Police rushed all of them to the nearby SSKM Hospital and they are now undergoing treatment in the emergency ward.
Among the injured are six tourists from Bangladesh ~ Kakali Rani Biswas (45), Briti Biswas (16), Abanti Biswas (8), Jayanti Rani Sarkar (53), Kazi Riyazuddin Mahin (8) and Kazi Mirajuddin Arbi (6).
They hail from Jessore, Khulna, and Narayanganj districts in Bangladesh and were out to visit Victoria Memorial.
SSKM Hospital sources said that they have suffered injuries either in the chest or leg.
Subil Pal, who has died in the incident, hailed from Dum Dum on the northern suburb of Kolkata. His wife and child daughter are admitted to the hospital with injuries.
In a separate incident of lightning at Raghunathpur in Purulia, three of a family have died and one has been injured. The incident occurred in the afternoon at Chelyama village in Raghunathpur block.
The deceased have been identified as Ranjit Bauri (30), his wife Rina Bauri (23), sister-in-law Rinku Bauri (26). Rinku’s husband, Sanjay Bauri, is battling for life on hospital bed.
