Siliguri: A leopard has been run over by an unidentified lorry at Madarihat in Alipurduar district.

The incident took place in the wee hours today and the carcass of the adult leopard was found on National Highway 31 today morning.

The leopard is suspected to have been mowed dead by a speeding lorry which was moving at a high speed and did not notice the animal crossing the road due to the dense fog.

The area where the leopard has been found dead is surrounded by reserve forests that are the habitat for wild animals like leopard, elephants, rhino, bison, etc. Forest department officials are yet to identify the lorry that ran over the leopard.

Cooch Behar’s divisional forest officer Bimal Biswas said that an FIR has been lodged at Madarihat police station over the death. “Going by the laid down procedure, we will conduct a post-mortem of the carcass and then cremate it deep inside the forest,” he said.
