Kolkata: Lt Gen MM Naravane has relinquished the chair of Eastern Army Commander today 31 August after having served in the position for 11 months.

He will now relocate to the Army headquarters in New Delhi to take over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, an appointment that was announced by the Defence ministry earlier this month.

Lt Gen Naravane had joined the Army’s Eastern Command as the General-Officer-Commanding-in-Chief on 1 October last year.

During his 11-month stint, he extensively visited the international borders with Tibet, China and Myanmar taking stock of the security arrangements.

Under his command, the Army carried out several successful counter-insurgency operations in the northeast. A new officer will shortly assume the charge of the Eastern Command, which is headquartered in Kolkata.
