Kolkata, 18 November: BENGAL transport and sports minister Madan Mitra resigned on Wednesday. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly accepted his resignation and has sent it to the Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi.
Mitra accused in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, was arrested on 12 December last year after being questioned for several hours by the sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was released on bail on 03 November following order of Alipore Court.
But was again put in the confinement of his house under police surveillance after CBI filed a bail petition seeking cancellation of his bail at the Calcutta High Court on 05 November.
Mitra known as a man to look for every solution of any problem in Trinamool Congress (TMC), has been with the party since the day it came into being. Prior to that he was with Indian National Congress (INC).
He won from Kamarhati constituency in the 2011 assembly election by defeating Manas Mukherjee of CPI (M) by a margin of 49,758 votes. Since then he has been holding the cabinet rank of minister-in-charge of transport and sports in Bengal.
