Kolkata, 26 August: PRITAM Deb, the main accused in the Barahnagar girl immolation case in Bengal’s North 24-Parganas district, has been arrested by the police late on Tuesday night. He will be produced in the Barrackpore court later on Wednesday.
Pritam has been arrested from his maternal uncle’s home at Hridaypur in the same district after police traced his location by tracking his mobile phone. He was later brought to the Barahnagar police station where senior officials are interrogating him to know his exact role in the incident.
Archana Deb, mother of Pritam and a co-accused in the case, is still absconding. So far, police have arrested six people in the case. The five others arrested are ~ Rana Roy, Kamal Kar, Shukla Kar, Pampa Sarkar and Shibani Roy ~ they are family members and neighbours of Pritam.
Pritam is accused of disturbing and humiliating Riki Shaw (23), his neighbour at Forward Bloc Colony in Barahnagar, with whom he had allegedly broken up three months ago. Unable to digest the humiliation, the girl allegedly set herself on fire at her home on 21 August and succumbed to the burns at NRS Medical College on 22 August.
The victim’s family has alleged that ever since their break-up, Pritam was disturbing her often and despite being protested against it, he did not stop. On 18 August when she informed Pritam’s mother about his misgivings, she along with a few other neighbours, allegedly humiliated and assaulted her.
The deceased girl’s family said that the incident had depressed Riki, following which she set herself ablaze.
