Kolkata, 07 September: IN a major breakthrough, police have unearthed a large illegal firearm-manufacturing unit in a suburb of Kolkata wherefrom firearms were being supplied to miscreants in Bengal and Bihar.

A special operation group of South 24-Parganas district police unearthed the factory at Kankuli in Rabindranagar by conducting a raid yesterday afternoon. Rabindranagar is barely 09 km away from Behala in south Kolkata.

Subsequently, the cops found 101 firearms, 09 kg explosives, and 07 mobile phones from the factory and arrested five persons including the tenant of the house in which the unit was functioning for over six months. The seized firearms include 95 single barrel short gun, four single barrel long gun, and two 9 mm pistols.

South 24-Parganas superintendent of police Sunil Kumar Choudhary said that among the five arrested, four were residents of Munger in Bihar, and the fifth person is a resident of Basanti in South 24-Parganas.

“The factory was running in the house of one Aftab Hussain, who also owned it. The other four are workers who used to manufacture the firearms,” Choudhary said. Aftab, who hails from Bhagalpur in Bihar, had taken the house on rent. The workers have been identified as Md Akram, Md Selim.

“From preliminary interrogation we have come to know that the arms manufactured here used to be sold in some areas of Kolkata, North and South 24-Parganas, and also Bihar. Further investigation is on to find out the entire supply chain and market,” the office added.

Supply of firearms from Bengal to Bihar is a surprisingly new trend. Till now it was from Munger in Bihar from where illegal firearms used to make their way into Kolkata and the rest of south Bengal.

This has also brought to fore that miscreants and arms dealers are gradually finding the suburbs of Kolkata to be a safe haven for them.
