Malda: Suspected BJP cadres have avenged the defection by a Gram Panchayat member of the party by pumping a bullet in the head of her three-year-old son.
The incident has taken place today at Ramnagar village under Manikchak police station jurisdiction in Malda.
Manikchak Gram Panchayat has 18 seats and in the elections held in May BJP wrested 1o seats, Trinamool six, Congress and Independent won in one seat each. Since BJP has an absolute majority, it is only natural and legal that the party is to form the Panchayat board.
The equation, however, changed. The Congress and Independent members extended support to Trinamool and so did a BJP member named Putul Mondal. This brought BJP and Trinamool to a tie with nine members each.
Thus, the administration opted for a toss to decide the head and deputy for the Gram Panchayat. Incidentally, BJP won in both cases.
But peeved at the defection by their member, a group of suspected BJP cadres raided the house of Putul Mondal this afternoon. To avenge the defection, they opened fire at Mondal and her husband. Both managed to flee in time and a bullet hit their son Mrinal in the head.
After the attack, the BJP gang fled. Residents of the area rushed in and took the little boy to Manikchak Rural Hospital. With his condition being critical, the child has since been relocated to Malda Medical College and Hospital. He is admitted to the critical care unit.
BJP Malda district president Sanjib Mishra has declined that BJP cadres raided or fired at the child. “Putul Mondal had demanded money from Trinamool for the defection. Since they lost in the toss, Trinamool goons attacked Mondal house and fired at her son,” he claimed.
Police have registered a murder case against unknown people. An arrest, however, is yet to be made in this connection.
