Kolkata: CHIEF Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the Centre is not allowing West Bengal’s tableaux for the coming Republic Day parade in Delhi as the proposed theme is “unity is harmony.”
She has also questioned the justification of cancelling the national holiday on Christmas and demanded that this should be restored at once.
“Our tableaux won the first prize at Republic Day parades for two years in 2013 and 2016. In 2015, our tableaux on Kanyashree were not allowed,” the Chief Minister said while speaking at the inauguration of Christmas celebrations at Allen Park on Park Street this evening.
“This year our proposed theme was “Ekotai Sampriti” (unity is harmony) and modifications were made twice in September and October as per the Centre’s suggestions. Yet, the Centre has cancelled our tableaux. Is it the theme why the tableaux have been rejected?”
Bengal CM also lashed out for cancelling the national holiday on Christmas.
“Christmas has all along been a national holiday but the Centre has cancelled this. I do not know what purpose it serves. There is no logic. If someone asks us to cancel holidays during Durga Puja, will we agree? There are some sentiments which must not be hurt.”
Battling for religious harmony, she said that everyone has the freedom to follow their own religion. But festivals are for everybody. “Be it Christmas, Eid, or Durga Puja ~we celebrate all festivals with equal fervour.”
After attending the event at Allen Park, the Chief Minister went to the nearby St Xavier’s College and took part in the pre-Christmas event there.
