Kolkata: ALTHOUGH his father Mulayam Singh Yadav had ditched Trinamool in 2012 by backing out from opposing Pranab Mukherjee as President of India, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has vowed to stand by Mamata Banerjee in her tirade against BJP.

The Yadav junior today called the Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo at her residence at Kalighat in Kolkata. He was in the city to attend the state unit conference of the Samajwadi Party held at Mahajati Sadan today.

Accompanied by party secretary Kiranmoy Nanda and senior leader Azam Khan, Yadav reached the CM’s residence around 5 in the afternoon for what he termed as a “courtesy call.” The Samajwadi leaders held near 40-minute closed-door meeting with the Trinamool supremo. Her nephew Abhishek Banerjee was also present.

Mamata did not disclose what transpired in the meeting. She only tweeted that Akhilesh Yadav “visited me today at my residence. We had a very cordial interaction.”

But while leaving, Yadav told the reporters waiting outside that his party will stand by Mamata’s fight against communal BJP. “Didi is fighting a secular battle and we from the Samajwadi Party are with her in this battle. We have to save the country from BJP,” he said.
