Kolkata: The state government has decided to increase the wages for civic volunteers, Anganwadi staff, and Asha workers.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced this while speaking at the annual Banga awards at Nazrul Mancha in south Kolkata. The monthly wage of the civic volunteers will be increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000; the wages of Anganwadi staff and Asha workers will be hiked from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 per month, she said.

The increase will come into effect from 1 October and will benefit nearly 4-lakh individuals. Around 1.3-lakh of them are civic volunteers.

The Chief Minister today conferred Bengal’s highest civilian award Banga Bibhushan on singer Asha Bhosle and Banga Bhushan award on Bengali actor Prasenjit Chatterjee at the Nazrul Mancha event. The awards were instituted in 2011 after Trinamool came to power for the first time.
