He is accused of collecting huge investment from the devotees of ISKCON at Mayapur in Nadia for the past three years. The matter came to light only on Monday after the ISKCON authorities sensed a foul play and lodged an FIR at Nabadwip police station.
The arrested man has been identified as Tapas Banerjee, who appears to be in his late 50’s.
Going by the FIR, Tapas visited ISKCON Mayapur headquarters for the first time in 2014 in an SUV flashing a blue beacon, used these days by senior civil servants.
He introduced himself as a secretary to the Chief Minister and exploited the hospitality of the ISKCON authorities.
After this, he started visiting Mayapur at regular intervals and made himself comfortable as a VIP guest.
Having established his clout, Tapas then allegedly lured the residential devotees of ISKCON into investing money in his so-called real-estate business. In the process, he raised several lakhs of rupees since 2015.
To spend the year-end holidays, he again went to Mayapur last week and checked in at an ISKCON guestroom. But by now the ISKCON authorities smelled a foul play as regards his identity and, straightway lodged an FIR at Nabadwip police station on Monday.
Acting on this, police arrested him on Monday night. Today he was produced in a local court and has been remanded in police custody.
