Kolkata, 09 January: TRINAMOOL began its “72 hours” nationwide demonstration against Modi government’s “political vendetta” and demonetisation this morning only to be granted a 36 hours concession by party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

In Kolkata, the demonstration was kicked off on a makeshift dais in front of RBI regional office at BBD Bag. Similar, demonstration has been launched in almost all district headquarters and towns in the state.

Outside the state demonstration is being carried out in Delhi by Trinamool MPs, and in Bhubaneswar, Punjab, Bihar, Manipur, Tripura, Assam, and Jharkhand by local units with support from leaders who have flown in from Bengal.

“We have launched a demonstration in different parts of the state and the country as well. This will be carried out from 09 am to 09 pm every day until 11 January,” Banerjee said after inaugurating the state government organised Mati Utsav in Burdwan today afternoon.

Earlier on 03 January, immediately after the arrest of Trinamool Lok Sabha leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay by CBI for alleged involvement in the Rose Valley Scam, Banerjee had announced that to protest the “political vendetta” of Modi government and demonetisation, Trinamool would carry out a “72 hours” agitation from 09 January all over the country.

Trinamool leaders are not willing to explain on record as to why the “72 hours” agitation has been practically reduced to a 36-hour show, but sources in the party offered an explanation.

“The party has realised that the agitation has met with a lukewarm response. Moreover, the road / rail blockades in the state since 03 January are angering common people. Probably this is why, Mamata Banerjee has reduced the duration of the demonstration,” the sources said.
