Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee government has changed this year’s May Day holiday in view of the Panchayat polls announced by the West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) today.
Since SEC has picked up 1 May as one of the dates on which the three-phase Panchayat polls will be held, the state government has shifted the May Day holiday to 2 May.
A notification to this effect was issued from state headquarters Nabanna today stating that all state and state-aided offices will remain open on 1 May and the employees will enjoy the holiday on 2 May instead.
A section of the senior employees of the state government and political observers has, however, questioned the actual motivation behind scheduling the poll on 1 May which is celebrated worldwide as International Workers’ Day.
“Going by the election rules, SEC finalised the dates in consultation with the state government. This means the state government has deliberately scheduled the election on 1 May. What harm it would have been if the poll was scheduled on 2 May,” they said.
