Bolpur, 10 January: JAYDEV Kenduli village in Birbhum, famous for being the birth place of 13th century poet Jayadeva, will soon be house to the country’s, and perhaps also the world’s first Baul Academy.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee today laid the foundation stone for the Baul Academy, which would be built by the state government to preserve, groom, and showcase this musical tradition unique to undivided Bengal. Baul are a group of mystic minstrels who now exist in Bengal and Bangladesh.

Laying foundation stone for the academy on the side line of inauguration of the annual Jaydev Mela today afternoon, Banerjee said that the Baul Academy would be developed into a world-class exhibition centre that people from across the globe would visit.

“A visit to Birbhum is incomplete without meeting the Bauls and listening to them play the ektara. Baul songs help in shaping our lives. With just an ektara they create such soulful music,” she said. On the occasion, the Chief Minister tried her hand on an ektara. Jaydev Kenduli village is located about 30 km off Santiniketan.
